‘Something Hackney Can Be Very Proud Of’

Inspired Young Artists Put Works on Show

Art students at Hackney’s BSix Sixth Form College presented their work to families, friends, councillors and visiting university representatives at their end of year show private view on Wednesday evening.

The show was a fantastic opportunity to take a close look at some of the finest pieces of work produced by the students and the topical theme for this year’s presentation was ‘Migration’.

The students, some of whom are already on the road to success with higher education offers from prestigious universities such as Goldsmith’s, the London College of Fashion and Brighton University, displayed an inspiring selection of works ranging from conceptual art and sculpture to photography and digital graphics.

Speaker Cllr Rosemary Sales, who has researched and taught on issues of migration in her academic career, visited the exhibition and said she was extremely impressed with the students' work - both the technical skills which it demonstrated and the imagination and creativity which it embodied.

She said: ‘It was especially interesting for me to see how many of the students had used the opportunity to explore very personal issues of cultural change and interaction and in some cases to challenge popular stereotypes of particular groups.

‘I particularly enjoyed talking to some of the students about their work. They were articulate and knowledgeable and it was clear that they had benefitted enormously from the whole process. This exhibition is certainly something which Hackney can be very proud of.’

Teachers in the department hailed the show as a great success and a perfect chance for the students to connect with the local community.

Fiona O’Connor, art and design course leader at the college, said: ‘The BSix Art show was such an important opportunity for the students to showcase all of their hard work. When students are given this chance to explain their work and see reactions to it, it gives them a wonderful sense of achievement.’
