Hackney Citizens (branch of Citizens UK)

In 2012-13 BSix College students led their own initiative to launch a leadership group of students who wanted to make a difference in their own community. This group, BCitizens are now a stalwart strand of the Student Voice at BSix. A key ingredient to their success and longevity is the partnership that was developed and has continued to flourish with Hackney Citizens, a branch of Citizens UK. Each year, Hackney Citizens run leadership training for groups of BSix students and throughout the year they involve and support students to be part of local community focused and political campaigns. The College won an award from Citizens UK in 2013-14 for ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community’ for the lead role that students had played in campaigns such as: the Clapton City Safe campaign, Blanket for a Stranger and the Hackney 100. Student Leader, Rhasan Brunner, who introduced the concept of BCitizens and was the Director of the group during his time at BSix, was awarded the LSIS Leading Learner of the Year award in 2013 and went on to speak at national conferences and to other Sixth Form Colleges about the initiative.
