David Blagbrouh

David Blagbrough, Chair of the BSix corporation

Why did you want to become a Governor of BSix?
My interest in becoming a BSix governor was stimulated by three factors

  • Admiration for Ken Warman both as an individual and Principal.
  • The importance of B6 in the education landscape for Hackney and the opportunity of learning about and understand the operation of a 6th form college and contributing to its development
  • The opportunity of being involved in an institution which prioritised student wellbeing and high expectations and encouraged creative and imaginative interventions such as BSeven and the BSix Baccalaureate

What do you regard as your key role and/or responsibility as a Governor of BSix?
Since taking office my primary function, as a critical friend, has been to offer the Principal and his senior management team as much support as possible in negotiating the many difficult issues that they have had to address. This has involved, inter alia

  • Challenging some of the claims made by the internal auditors and others as a member of the Audit Committee
  • As Chair of the Standards Committee, supporting efforts by the SMT to effect much needed change and to highlight their many successes
  • Acting as an ambassador of the college within the borough and elsewhere
Ensuring effective and smooth running governance in my capacity as Vice Chair

Abdulhaq Bismillah

Abdulhaq Bismillah, parent governor

I studied at current BSix building housing former Brooke House School for three years, having arrived from Gujarat, India to join my late father in 1979. My family and I have lived in Clapton for 33 years. I have two sons and three daughters. At present I am a carer and working as a Youth Worker. I am involved in lots of charitable work and have an interest in education, youth work, social housing, homelessness and public libraries.

I have a son who is studying A levels and a son who successfully completed BTEC Diploma in extended Science with Triple Distinctions. Thanks to outstanding leadership of Mr Ken Warman, as well as an excellent senior management leaders, dedicated, hard working, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate teachers that my son and young people leave Bsix with positive experience in a non-selective sixth form college thriving in an inner-city deprived and disadvantaged area of Hackney with multitude of problems. I would encourage and especially appeal to young people of Hackney to visit and try out Bsix what it has to offer before deciding to pursue your study elsewhere or outside of Hackney. Mr Warman - Principal, Mr Elliott, Miss Francis, Miss Westgate, and Miss Roulston Vice Principals and teachers has very high expectation of students. Do join us in our continuing journey of success and see where it leads to.....Russell group and Oxford and Cambridge universities.

I have been parent governor for almost three years and dedicate my time on the standards committee. I am proud to be associated with continued success of the college as it has gone from strength to strength in last six years and have an excellent reputation with the local and wider communities. My main focus is on teaching and learning and to drive the standards even higher. I am keen to see college pursue even greater involvement and voice of parents and students in college management. I believe college has good platform to build on its continuing success especially in regards to BSeven with its endless, wide variety of interesting enriching activities and Raising Aspiration programme.
